A 21 Year Old single cask Foursquare from the 2001 vintage, bottled unsweetened at full strength 54.5% by The Duchess, an unusually coconut driven Barbados rum with pastries, prunes and spice over a long, dried fruit finish.
Description
The Duchess, a Dutch bottler, selected this single cask of Foursquare, the strict no additives pot and column rum from Richard Seale's St Philip distillery. Distilled in 2001 and aged twenty one years, it is offered at its natural 54.5%, a long matured, full proof expression of the island style.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak, it pushes the coconut side of the Barbadian profile to the front, joined by pastries, ripe tropical fruit and a touch of prune on the nose. The palate turns sweet and spiced with coconut and dried fruit, the finish long and woody with allspice. Two decades in cask give it depth while the proof keeps it lively, the pronounced coconut character making it stand a little apart from the usual Foursquare fingerprint. Dry, outspoken and distinctive, this rewards slow sipping.
