Description
The Clydeside Distillery sits in the old 1877 Pumphouse on the Queen's Dock, on the River Clyde in Glasgow, opened in 2017 by Tim Morrison of the Morrison whisky family. Stobcross was its inaugural single malt, the first whisky bottled by the distillery, and takes its name from the historic Stobcross, a cross marking the old route to Dumbarton Rock and later the site of the dock the Morrisons helped build. This is the second batch.
Made from Scottish barley and Loch Katrine water in a single pair of copper stills, the spirit is matured in a marriage of American oak, which lends vanilla and a soft sweetness, and European oak, which adds dried fruit and a gentle spice. The two woods build a rounded young malt, bottled at 46 percent.
On the palate it opens floral and fruity, with orchard fruit, tropical notes and sweet vanilla, a thread of citrus, and a hint of white pepper into a fresh, fruity finish. The signature bottling of Glasgow's Clydeside, and a fine introduction to the young Lowland house style. Bottled at 46 percent without chill filtration's heavy hand, it carries the freshness and faint pepper that mark the distillery's young Lowland spirit.
