A seventeen year Australian Beenleigh single cask from The Bottle Shop, distilled in 2007 and bottled at a towering 72.1%, unsweetened yet surprisingly drinkable, with concentrated yellow fruit, pear, tea, eucalyptus and warm spice.
Description
The Bottle Shop's Beenleigh MAIC10 2007 is a single cask from one of Australia's oldest distilleries, a pot still molasses rum aged seventeen years and bottled at an enormous 72.1%. Despite the strength, it drinks far gentler than the number suggests, fruity and floral rather than fierce.
Matured in ex bourbon wood and unsweetened, it concentrates the Beenleigh house style into burnt sugar, eucalyptus, tea and pear on the nose, a palate of pear, tea, burnt sugar and oak, and a long finish of tea, cocoa and yellow fruit. The full proof bottling intensifies the fruit and structure without tipping into harsh heat, and a drop of water opens it further. This is a slow sipping rum for experienced palates who enjoy high proof Beenleigh 2007 releases, offering concentrated yellow orchard fruit and a long, structured close at a strength that demands patience and respect.
