Tetramythos are reviving Mavro Kalavrytino, a rare grape from the northern Peloponnese mountains. This natural, organic red is fermented and aged just five months in oak, keeping it light and fresh, with bright red berries, cherry and a floral, herbal lift at 12.5 percent.
Description
Tetramythos, run by brothers Aristides and Stathis Spanos with winemaker Panagiotis Papagiannopoulos, is bringing back Mavro Kalavrytino, a rare red grape from the high country of the northern Peloponnese. The variety is hard to grow but combines fruit energy with the elegance of a noble grape. Grown at altitude in the Patras hills, the vineyards benefit from cool mountain air and a wide day to night temperature swing that preserves acidity and freshness, which keeps the alcohol low at 12.5 percent. The wine is made naturally, with organic fruit and minimal intervention, and aged only five months in oak so the wood stays in the background and the bright fruit leads. Expect a pale to medium ruby colour and a perfumed nose of red berries, cherry, redcurrant and rose with a peppery, herbal edge. The palate is light and fresh, with low tannin, crunchy red fruit and a savoury, mineral finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees. It is flexible at the table and can stand in for a white.
