Marcenca is a pure Garnacha from Terroir Sense Fronteres, grown at 800 metres in the Sierra del Montsant in Catalonia. Aged in concrete to keep the fruit pure, it shows a pale, delicate hue, wild berries, violets and a fresh, herbal lift.
Description
Marcenca comes from the Els Montalts vineyard, regarded as the top site of Terroir Sense Fronteres, in the D.O. Montsant in Catalonia. The old Garnacha vines grow at around 800 metres in the Sierra del Montsant, where the altitude brings cool nights and a wide diurnal range that slows ripening, preserves acidity and yields a paler, more aromatic style of Grenache than the warmer valley floor. The winery works outside the area's more extractive traditions, and this wine is aged in concrete tanks rather than oak, a vessel that lets the wine breathe gently without adding wood flavour, keeping the fruit pure and the texture fresh. The wine is pale and light in the glass, an ethereal hue that signals its delicate build. The nose shows wild forest berries and cherry with violet, dried herbs and thyme over an earthy base. The palate is light and elegant, with fine tannins, bright acidity and a savoury, herbal finish that reflects the high mountain site. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees. It suits roast poultry, game birds and mushroom dishes.
