Terroir al Limit makes this Priorat white from Grenache Blanc and Macabeo grown on llicorella slate. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, it is a taut, mineral white with white peach, citrus and a saline, herbal edge.
Description
Terroir al Limit is a Priorat estate built around the idea of letting each site speak, farming organically and picking across several plots in different villages of the appellation. Historic Blanc blends Grenache Blanc and Macabeo grown on the region's famous llicorella, a slate and quartzite soil that forces the vine roots deep in search of water and stamps Priorat wines with a firm, stony minerality. The steep, poor slopes and hot, dry climate keep yields low and flavour concentrated, while altitude preserves the acidity that keeps a white like this fresh. Rather than the oak often used in Priorat, this wine is fermented and aged for six months in stainless steel, a choice that keeps the fruit clean and pushes the mineral, saline character to the fore. The wine is pale straw with green tints. The nose shows white peach and lemon over a savoury herbal and white-flower note, and the palate is dry and tightly structured, its acidity and slatey grip carrying a long, saline, faintly nutty finish. This is a mineral, food-focused white rather than a fruit-forward one. Serve chilled at 10 to 12 degrees in a white glass. It suits grilled white fish, shellfish, roast chicken and hard nutty cheeses.
