Terras do Cigarrón is a Monterrei Godello made by a cooperative in southeast Galicia, close to the Portuguese border. It shows white flowers, pome fruit and a tropical hint over a light, fresh palate typical of the grape and the region.
Description
Terras do Cigarrón takes its name from the masked figures of the Verín carnival in Ourense, and is made from Godello by a cooperative in the same town, in the D.O. Monterrei in southeast Galicia, close to the Portuguese border. Monterrei is a warm inland valley protected from Atlantic rain, with granite and slate based soils and a continental influence tempered by altitude. The wide difference between warm days and cool nights slows ripening and locks in acidity, which is what keeps a Godello from this region fresh rather than heavy. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel at controlled temperature to keep the wine primary and preserve the delicate aromatics. It is pale with green tints. The nose is fresh and lively, with freshly opened white flowers, pome fruit such as apple and pear, and a subtle tropical note. The palate is light and clean, with white peach, melon and a citrus lift, finishing dry with a stony edge. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits shellfish, white fish and lighter dishes.
