Terraprima Negre is an organic Penedès red from Can Ràfols dels Caus in the Garraf hills, blending Carignan and Garnacha. Six months in French oak keep it fresh and fruit-led, with raspberry, cherry and a peppery, herbal lift.
Description
Terraprima Negre is the organic red from Can Ràfols dels Caus, the estate built by Carlos Esteva as a champion of the Garraf hills in Catalonia's Penedès. It blends Carignan and Garnacha Tinta, two Mediterranean varieties that bring red fruit, fresh acidity and a peppery, herbal character. The Garraf massif is defined by poor, rocky limestone soils that drain freely and restrain vigour, concentrating the fruit while the elevation and sea influence keep the wine fresh and aromatic rather than heavy. This is made as an early-drinking style: after fermentation it spends only six months in French oak, enough to round the tannins through gentle barrel oxidation without covering the fruit, so the wine keeps its bright, primary character. The colour is a lively violet-red. The nose is fresh and fruity, with raspberry, red cherry and redcurrant over garrigue herbs and a touch of black pepper. The palate is light to medium, juicy and supple, with soft tannins, lively acidity and a clean, savoury finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits grilled pork, roast chicken, charcuterie and tomato-based dishes.
