Can Ràfols dels Caus makes this organic Penedès white from Macabeo, Malvasía and Xarel·lo grown on the Garraf massif. It is a young, unoaked blend showing green apple, pear and a saline, herbal freshness.
Description
Terraprima Blanc comes from Can Ràfols dels Caus, a Penedès estate with more than forty years of history set in the Garraf mountain range south of Barcelona. Owner Carlos Esteva has long made wines that show the character of this singular terroir, and Terraprima is a more recent project on a farm beside the main estate. The blend of Macabeo, Malvasía and Xarel·lo is farmed organically. The Garraf massif is limestone country, and the poor, calcareous soils and coastal influence give Mediterranean whites their saline lift and firm acidity. This is a young wine made without oak, fermented in a way that keeps the fruit clean and the aromatics fresh, so the emphasis stays on primary character and mineral tension rather than texture from ageing. The colour is pale straw. The nose shows green apple, pear and a touch of melon, with white flowers and a herbal, saline edge over the top. The palate is dry, light and fresh, with crisp acidity carrying a clean, faintly salty finish. The low 11.5 percent alcohol makes it easy to drink. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It suits fresh shellfish, grilled white fish, green salads and young goats cheese.
