Description
Terra Vermella is made by the Nin-Ortiz family, who are based in Porrera in the heart of Priorat but vinify this white from an old vineyard at Pla de Manlleu in the province of Barcelona. The grape is Parellada, a Catalan variety usually valued for its delicacy, floral aromatics and fresh acidity, here given more weight through its handling. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, following the lunar calendar and using natural preparations in place of synthetic inputs to build soil life. Fermentation takes place in used 225 litre barrels, and the wine ages for eight months on its lees in the same barrels. Keeping the wine on its lees in seasoned oak adds body and a subtle bready, savoury depth through mannoprotein release, while the used wood contributes texture and gentle oxygen exchange rather than obvious toast. It pours pale gold. The nose leads with peach and apricot over white flowers and pear, with a light dough note from the lees. The palate is textured and dry, the orchard fruit carried on fresh acidity to a savoury, faintly nutty finish. Serve at 10 to 11 degrees.
