Terra Remota makes Camino from organic vines in Alt Empordà, blending Garnacha with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Hand harvested and aged 12 months in large French oak, it shows redcurrant, ripe cherry and a peppery, herbal lift.
Description
Terra Remota was founded by Emma and Marc Bournazeau in Sant Climent Sescebes, in the windswept Alt Empordà of north east Catalonia, where 40 hectares of vines surround the cellar. Camino is built on Garnacha Tinta at 50 percent with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, farmed organically and picked by hand into 10 kilo crates. The fruit ferments in both wood and stainless steel with a long maceration after destemming, which extracts colour, gentle tannin and the savoury phenolics that give the wine its grip. It then ages for 12 months in 500 litre French oak barrels; the larger format means a lower ratio of wood to wine, so the oak influence stays restrained and the fruit and herbal character of the Empordà comes through. The colour is bright and deep. The nose offers redcurrant and ripe cherry with garrigue herbs, fine spice and a floral note. The palate is medium to full bodied, fresh and balanced, with supple tannin shaped by the cooling Tramuntana wind. Serve at 16 degrees alongside grilled lamb, roast duck or a mushroom dish.
