Terra d’Uro make this Tinta de Toro red from old plots in D.O. Toro, some pre-phylloxera. Aged just four months in French and American oak, it is vibrant and structured, with blackberry, spiced black cherry and a firm core.
Description
Terra d'Uro La Enfermera is a Tinta de Toro red from D.O. Toro, made by Oscar Garrote, Cristiano Van Zeller and Pipa Ortega, three oenologists with long experience. They work around seven hectares of small plots with vines ranging from 15 to over 140 years old, some from pre-phylloxera times. Toro's continental climate of hot days and cold nights, together with poor sandy and stony soils, gives Tinta de Toro, the local Tempranillo, its deep colour, ripe fruit and firm structure. The old, low-yielding vines concentrate that character further. This bottling keeps oak in check, with just four months in French and American barrels, enough to round the tannins and add a little spice while leaving the fruit in the foreground. Farming is respectful of the land. The colour is deep and saturated. The nose shows blackberry and spiced black cherry, with black pepper, liquorice and a light vanilla note. The palate is full and vibrant, with the firm tannins typical of Toro carried by ripe fruit. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting young vintages. It suits grilled and roast red meats.
