Description
Ternario 1 is a young red from Venta La Vega in D.O. Almansa, in Castilla-La Mancha southeast of Albacete. The grape is Garnacha Tintorera, also called Alicante Bouschet, one of the few varieties with red flesh as well as red skin, which gives deeply coloured, juicy wines. The defining feature of the region is altitude: the vineyards sit at around 700 metres, where cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic freshness and keep the alcohol in check, here a moderate 12.5%. The wine is aged twelve months partly in French oak barrels and partly in concrete vats. Concrete is neutral and allows the wine to settle and soften while keeping the fruit clean and unmarked by wood, while the oak portion adds a little spice and texture; the two together build a fresh, fruit-led style. It is bright cherry red. The nose is open, with fresh red and dark berries, ripe cherry, a touch of black pepper and a stony, earthy note. The palate is light to medium bodied, juicy and direct, the tannin soft, the finish clean. This is an everyday red made for early drinking. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, lightly cool if you like. It is a flexible table wine.
