Tenuta Le Colonne makes Plenum from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah on the Tuscan coast near Bolgheri. Aged twelve months in oak, it is a ripe, fruit-driven red with plum, cherry and a peppery Syrah lift.
Description
Plenum comes from Tenuta Le Colonne, Alejandro Bulgheroni's coastal Tuscan estate in the Bolgheri area near the Tyrrhenian Sea. Classified as IGT Costa Toscana, it gives the winemaker freedom to blend Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, the Syrah adding a peppery, fruit-forward character to the Bordeaux core. The seaside position moderates the Tuscan heat through cooling breezes, which lengthens ripening and lets the grapes build ripe fruit while keeping acidity in balance. The well-drained coastal soils concentrate the flavour and give the wine its generous fruit weight. It spends twelve months in oak, enough to round the tannins and fold in vanilla and sweet spice through slow oxygen exchange without overwhelming the ripe fruit. The colour is deep ruby-purple. The nose is rich with ripe plum, black cherry and red berries, lifted by black pepper, liquorice and oak. The palate is full-bodied and fruit-driven, with soft, ripe tannins and a warming, generous finish. It is approachable young and drinks well over the next few years. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It is a flexible match for grilled and roasted meats.
