Tenuta Le Colonne farms organically in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, blending Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Twelve months in oak frames ripe cherry and plum, herb and a fresh, gravelly edge from the maritime terroir.
Description
Tenuta Le Colonne works organically in Bolgheri, the coastal strip of Tuscany that made its name with Bordeaux grapes rather than native Sangiovese. This Rosso blends Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on gravelly, free-draining soils close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The maritime setting brings warm days and cooling sea breezes, a swing that ripens the fruit fully while holding acidity and keeping the herbal lift typical of Cabernet Franc. The free-draining gravels limit vigour and push the roots down, adding a savoury, mineral edge. The wine ages 12 months in oak, where measured oxygen exchange through the staves softens the tannins and knits the fruit together with a little spice and vanilla. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe cherry, plum and redcurrant over leafy herb, pepper and a gravelly note. The palate is medium to full, with supple tannins, fresh acidity and a clean savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. Younger vintages benefit from a short decant. It suits grilled and roast red meats and herb-led dishes.
