Tenuta di Carleone makes Uno from Sangiovese grown on Tuscan soils at Radda in Chianti. Organically farmed and aged eighteen months in neutral vessels, it shows dark cherry, plum and dried herb over a savoury, earthy frame.
Description
Tenuta di Carleone sits at Radda in Chianti in the Tuscan hills, where Karl Egger and Sean O'Callaghan farm Sangiovese organically. Uno is their flagship red, built to express classic Tuscan Sangiovese with a contemporary hand. The galestro and alberese soils common to higher Radda sites give Sangiovese its firm acidity and slim tannins, while the altitude and wide diurnal swing between warm days and cool nights slow ripening and preserve aromatic detail. The wine spends eighteen months ageing in separate containers, a slow oxidative period that softens tannin and knits the components together without overlaying obvious oak. The colour is medium garnet. The nose leads with dark cherry and plum, backed by dried herbs, tobacco and leather, with the earthy, savoury character typical of well sited Sangiovese. The palate is medium to full bodied, with bright acidity, fine grained tannin and a long finish marked by black pepper and soil. Serve at sixteen to eighteen degrees and decant an hour ahead. It suits roast beef, lamb and aged pecorino.
