Il Guercio is Tenuta di Carleone’s Sangiovese from Radda in Chianti, named for winemaker Sean O’Callaghan. Organically farmed and aged twelve months in concrete, it shows fresh red cherry, plum and a savoury, earthy character.
Description
Tenuta di Carleone was founded in 2012 at Radda in Chianti by Sean O'Callaghan and Karl Egger, who farm Sangiovese organically in the Tuscan hills of Siena province. Il Guercio, named after O'Callaghan, is a fresher, more immediate Sangiovese than the estate's flagship. The galestro and alberese soils of higher Radda lend the grape its tight acidity and slim tannin, while the cool nights at altitude hold back ripening and keep the fruit lifted and precise. Ageing takes place over twelve months in concrete, an inert material that allows slow micro oxygenation and rounds the tannin while leaving the fruit unmarked by oak. The colour is bright ruby. The nose offers red cherry, plum and a touch of violet over dried herbs and earth. The palate is medium bodied with crisp acidity, supple tannin and a clean savoury finish. This is a Sangiovese built for the table rather than long cellaring. Serve at sixteen degrees. It works with tomato based pasta, roast pork and cured meats.
