Description
Tenuta delle Terre Nere farms the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, an estate founded by Marc de Grazia during the region's early 2000s revival. This Moganazzi bottling comes from a single contrada on the volcano's north face, planted to the native Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Etna's soils are black volcanic ash, lava and mineral-rich sand that drain sharply and lend a smoky, saline character, while the high altitude brings a wide day to night temperature swing that preserves acidity and builds aromatic detail over a long, cool ripening. The wine ages eighteen months in oak barrels, the wood rounding the grape's naturally firm tannins and adding a light spice through gentle oxygen exchange. The colour is pale to medium ruby. The nose is fragrant with wild cherry, red berries, dried herbs and rose, over woodsmoke and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied and taut, with fine grippy tannins and bright acidity carrying a mineral, savoury finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits roast duck, guinea fowl and mushroom dishes.
