Description
Tenuta delle Terre Nere sits on the northern face of Mount Etna in Sicily, one of Europe's most active volcanoes, and works this white from Carricante with a small share of other local white varieties. The name means black earth, a reference to the dark basaltic soil built up by past and present eruptions. That volcanic ground is free draining and rich in minerals, and the high altitude of the Etna slopes brings cool nights and a wide diurnal swing that holds on to the grape's natural acidity through the growing season. Carricante is a late ripening, high acid variety, and on this terroir it keeps a taut structure and a distinct saline, smoky character. The 2024 is farmed sustainably and made in a fresh, mineral style. It pours pale straw with a green tint. The nose is citrus led, with lemon, green apple and white flowers over a flinty, smoky note. The palate is dry and linear, with white peach fruit, a firm acid line and a salty finish that reflects the volcanic soil. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass.
