Telmo Rodríguez built Basa in Rueda from Verdejo with a little Viura, farmed across the high Castilian plateau. Fermented young in steel, it leads with melon, lemon and green apple, finishing crisp and lightly herbal with the grape trademark bite.
Description
Basa Blanco is a Rueda white made by Telmo Rodríguez, one of Spain's most influential winemakers, from Verdejo with a smaller portion of Viura. The vineyards sit on the high Castilian plateau, where stony, free draining soils and a wide diurnal range are the key to the style: warm days ripen the fruit while cold nights lock in acidity and aroma. The wine is fermented young in stainless steel with no oak, which keeps the fruit primary and the finish crisp, while the Viura fills out the mid palate and softens the sharper edge of the Verdejo. The wine is pale straw with a green tint. The nose is fresh and fruit led, with melon, lemon and green apple and a light tropical lift. The palate is juicy and direct, the fruit carried on brisk acidity to a dry, lightly herbal finish with the bitter twist typical of Verdejo. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It works as an aperitif and with white fish, shellfish, green salads and roast chicken.
