Tecuán Cupreata is a mezcal from the state of Guerrero, made from wild Cupreata agave, locally called Papalote or Papalome for the butterfly its broad leaves recall. The plants take ten to twelve years to mature fully and are notably aromatic, much of the harvest drawn from the wild country around Chilpancingo. The name comes from the Nahuatl Tecuani, a jaguar native to Guerrero and Michoacan.
Unaged and bottled at 40.5%, it leans on the fruit forward character that the long lived Cupreata is known for. The nose shows pronounced roasted agave, overripe mango, pineapple, papaya and pear with salted caramel, honey and thyme, while the palate is mildly smoky with sweet dried mango, peach and lime blossom. The finish is warming and long, carrying lightly smoked plum, honey and apricot jam.
