Description
This is a Teaninich single malt, from the independent bottler Brave New Spirits, a 9 year old from 2016, drawn from cask 2313517 and bottled at 49.9%. The outturn was 307 bottles. Teaninich, founded in 1817 by a Napoleonic veteran near the Cromarty Firth at Alness, is a key malt of Johnnie Walker. It was founded by Blind Captain Hugh Munro, a Napoleonic veteran, on his Teaninich estate.
Distilled on Highland spring water through fat copper stills, building the light Highland style blenders prize. A Port cask gave a plum and red berry depth. Still young, the malt is grassy and oily with a citrus lift. The light, oily make takes cask character well across maturation. Captain Hugh Munro built the distillery to give his tenants' barley a buyer. Almost all of its make is destined for blends rather than single malt. A hammer mill and mash filter, installed in 2000, replaced the traditional mash tun.
Bottled at a cask strength 49.9%, it is rich. The Port cask adds plum and red berry, and grass, pear and a gentle wax meet honeyed oak sweetness underneath. Soft orchard fruit and grass sit behind the sweetness. It closes clean, grassy and waxy. This is Teaninich's clean, grassy Highland style.
