Description
Bottled by The Whisky Cask, this Teaninich, a 39 year old from 1973, drawn from cask 6068 and bottled at 40.1%. Teaninich was opened in 1817 on the Teaninich estate in the northern Highlands at Alness, and it sends almost all of its make to blends. Fat copper stills add an oily texture to the clean, grassy spirit.
The spirit was run from a clear wort through the distillery's tall stills, to build a clean, waxy, grassy character. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending honey and vanilla. Decades leave it deep and oily, candied fruit and beeswax with great age. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the grassy, waxy core over time. A hammer mill and mash filter, installed in 2000, replaced the traditional mash tun. That ultra clear wort is the source of Teaninich's fragrant, green tea grassiness. Teaninich Castle nearby, once the family seat, is now a hotel and restaurant.
At cask strength 40.1% it is muscular yet green. A grassy, waxy freshness sit alongside soft vanilla and honey from the cask. The texture is light and oily, the grass threaded with honey. A clean, gently waxy finish lingers. This is the green tea malt of Easter Ross.
