Description
An independent Teaninich, an independent Global Whisky Limited bottling, a 13 year old Highland malt from 2009, drawn from cask 716903 and bottled at 55.1%. Just 247 bottles were filled. Teaninich, first built in 1817 near the Cromarty Firth at Alness, is a key malt of Johnnie Walker. It is the only Scotch malt distillery to mash through a mash filter rather than a mash tun.
Distilled on Highland spring water through fat copper stills, building the light Highland style blenders prize. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness to the green make. By this age the green spirit rounds into orchard fruit and a waxy depth. The light, oily make takes cask character well across maturation. A 2013 expansion added a new six still house, more than doubling capacity. Most casks are refill ex-Bourbon, which lets the grassy spirit show through. Captain Hugh Munro built the distillery to give his tenants' barley a buyer.
At a natural 55.1% it is full and oily. The Oloroso adds figgy fruit and a warm nuttiness, and a grassy, waxy freshness sit alongside honeyed oak sweetness underneath. It is fresh and oily, the fruit and oak well matched. The finish runs fresh, green and oily. This is the green tea malt of Easter Ross.
