Description
Signatory Vintage selected this Teaninich, aged 13 year old from 2008, drawn from cask 702611 + 702615 and bottled at 46%. Founded in 1817 by Captain Hugh Munro north of Inverness at Alness, Teaninich is a big Highland workhorse. Teaninich is Diageo's third largest distillery, and almost all its make goes to blends.
It was drawn off fat copper stills fed by a uniquely clear wort, for a fragrant spirit with a green tea lift. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the grass lead. By this age the green spirit rounds into orchard fruit and a waxy depth. A patient maturation suits the light, grassy Teaninich character. Most casks are refill ex-Bourbon, which lets the grassy spirit show through. Captain Hugh Munro built the distillery to give his tenants' barley a buyer. Almost all of its make is destined for blends rather than single malt. A hammer mill and mash filter, installed in 2000, replaced the traditional mash tun.
At 46% it is soft, green and oily. A gentle vanilla from the wood runs under green apple, grass and a light honey. It is fresh and clean, the green spirit shining through. A grassy, gently spiced finish lingers. This is a fresh, waxy Highland single malt.
