Te Whare Ra grows this organic Gewurztraminer in Marlborough, New Zealand. The variety’s naturally low acidity and thick pink skins give a perfumed white of lychee, rose and ginger with a rich, oily texture and a dry, spiced finish.
Description
Te Whare Ra is a small organic producer in Marlborough, better known for Sauvignon Blanc but with a long track record in aromatic varieties. Gewurztraminer is one of the most distinctive white grapes, with pink-tinged skins that carry high levels of aromatic compounds, and it needs a cool site to hold acidity as those aromatics develop. Marlborough's long, sunny days and cool nights suit it well, allowing full ripeness while retaining freshness. The grape is naturally low in acid and high in sugar, so ripeness and picking date are critical to keeping the wine balanced. Organic farming keeps the vineyard soils active and the fruit expressive. This bottling is dry, letting the variety's spice and structure lead. The colour is bright gold. The nose is intense and typical, with lychee, rose petal, orange peel and a warm ginger spice. The palate is full and oily in texture, broad rather than sharp, with a dry, faintly bitter finish that keeps it savoury. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits aromatic food as much as the aperitif hour.
