Brothers Pericles and Stelios Tatsis make this rosé in Goumenissa, Macedonia, from the local Negoska grape. Farmed biodynamically with minimal intervention, it is dry and savoury with red currant, rose and a wild herbal edge.
Description
The Tatsis family works 14 hectares in Goumenissa, in Greek Macedonia, and ranks among the country's pioneers of minimal intervention winemaking since the 1990s. This rosé is made from Negoska, a soft, low acid red variety native to the area, farmed biodynamically and organically. Goumenissa sits on the slopes of Mount Paiko, where altitude and a continental climate with a wide diurnal range preserve freshness in a grape that can otherwise turn flat. Winemaking is hands off, with native yeast fermentation, no fining or filtering and no oak, so the fruit and site come through directly. Expect a pale, slightly hazy pink. The nose is savoury and gently wild, with red currant and red berries, dried herbs, a floral rose lift and an earthy undertone. The palate is dry and textural, the acidity moderate but fresh, finishing on a stony, herbal note. As a low intervention wine it shows a little more grip and savour than a conventional rosé. Serve lightly chilled at around 10 to 12 degrees. It suits grilled white fish, roast chicken and vegetable dishes.
