Brothers Stergios and Periklis Tatsis make this orange wine from Malagouzia, a Greek variety rescued from near extinction, in Macedonia. Twelve months in oak gives it apricot, orange marmalade and a firm grip, farmed biodynamically with minimal intervention.
Description
Tatsis Winery is a family estate in Macedonia run by the brothers Stergios and Periklis Tatsis, working organically and biodynamically with minimal intervention. This orange wine is made from Malagouzia, an aromatic Greek variety brought back from near extinction in the 1970s and now central to the country's white wine revival. The northern Greek climate gives warm days and cool nights that ripen the fruit while holding acidity and the variety's floral aromatics. The wine is made with extended skin contact, the juice macerating on the grape skins to extract colour, aromatic phenolics and the tannic structure that separates orange wine from a standard white. It then spends twelve months in oak, a longer ageing that adds a savoury, nutty layer and softens the texture while the wood allows slow oxygen exchange. Made with no added inputs, it shows a deep amber colour. The nose is apricot, orange marmalade and honey, with dried herbs and beeswax. The palate is dry and firmly structured, carrying almond and a stony, earthy depth to a long finish. Serve at 13 to 15 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits roast pork and hard cheese.
