Bodegas Volver grows this single-variety Monastrell in D.O. Alicante, on arid calcareous soil around Pinoso. The vines are bush trained and ungrafted, and the young, unoaked wine is ripe and warm, with dark plum, garrigue herbs and black pepper.
Description
Tarima Orgánico is made by Bodegas Volver in Pinoso, in the hot Alicante hinterland, from Monastrell alone. The vineyards are planted in the bush-vine style and worked by hand without machinery, a traditional approach suited to the dry, low-yielding terrain. The vines grow ungrafted on arid, shallow soils studded with calcareous rock and very poor in organic matter, conditions that limit vigour and push the roots deep for water. Monastrell ripens late and needs heat, which Alicante supplies in full, building high sugar and the firm, fleshy tannin the grape is known for. This bottling is made for early drinking, with no oak ageing, so the fruit stays primary and direct. Farming is organic and the wine is suitable for vegans. The colour is dense purple. The nose shows ripe blackberry and dark plum, with wild thyme, dried herb and a peppery lift typical of warm-climate Monastrell. The palate is full and warm, with concentrated black fruit, a savoury herbal undertone and a dry, slightly earthy finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It works with grilled lamb, barbecued pork and hearty stews.
