Description
Tapatio Excelencia Gran Reserva Extra Añejo is a long aged 100% agave tequila from Tapatio, the Camarena family's home brand made at the La Alteña distillery in the highlands of Jalisco, NOM 1139. The line traces back to Don Felipe Camarena, who opened La Alteña in 1937, and this extra añejo was for years reserved for the family and friends of Don Felipe and Carlos Camarena before reaching the open market.
It ages roughly four years in new French oak, a tighter, more tannic wood than the usual ex-bourbon American barrels, which pushes the profile toward dried fruit, clove and dry baking spice over a deep baked agave core. The result is a structured, wood led extra añejo where the agave moves to mid palate and the French oak sets the tone. Bottled at 40%; additive status checked against Tequila Matchmaker.
