Description
Bottled by A.D. Rattray, this Tamnavulin, aged 28 year old from 1988, drawn from cask 10028 and bottled at 47.5%. 225 bottles in all. Tamnavulin was founded in 1966 on the River Livet in the Livet glen; it is named for the old mill that stood on its site. Purifiers on the spirit stills keep only the lightest vapours, for a delicate spirit.
It was worked through purifier stills for a clean, fruity spirit, for the light, fruity Speyside make Tamnavulin is known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the fruit lead. At this age it is rounded and full, the fruit folded into a honeyed body. Refill oak lets the delicate distillery character lead, grass over orchard fruit. Tamnavulin sits in Glen Livet, close to Glenlivet, Braeval and Tomintoul. The light, clean make takes a cask finish particularly well. The site is home to one of Scotland's largest bat colonies. Built in the 1960s boom, its industrial buildings sit amid picturesque country.
At a natural 47.5% it is full and fruity. Meadow flowers and ripe fruit meet a quiet vanilla from the refill oak. Soft orchard fruit and vanilla sit behind the sweetness. Apple, honey and oak draw out the close. This is an easy going, fruity Speyside malt.
