Description
This is a Tamnavulin single malt, chosen and bottled by Elixir Distillers, a 25 year old Speyside malt from 1992, drawn from cask 5377 and bottled at 50.6%. The outturn was 247 bottles. Set in the Livet glen of Speyside, Tamnavulin has distilled since 1966. It is now owned by the Philippine Emperador group, through Whyte and Mackay.
The spirit was run through purifier stills on soft Easterton Spring water, to build a clean, orchard fruit character. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the fruit lead. Past twenty years the spirit turns honeyed and full while keeping its finesse. The light, fruity make takes a cask finish particularly well. Its modern range leans on cask finishes, the motto single malt, double flavour. The name is Gaelic for mill on the hill, a nod to the old mill on its grounds. Tamnavulin sits in Glen Livet, close to Glenlivet, Braeval and Tomintoul.
Bottled at a cask strength 50.6%, it is rich. Orchard fruit and a grassy lift sit alongside soft vanilla and honey from the cask. A ripe pear and a gentle spice lift it. The close is soft, fruit over gentle oak. This is the smooth face of Speyside whisky.
