Description
Living Souls bottled this Tamnavulin single malt, a 10 year old Speyside malt and bottled at 46%. Set in the heart of Speyside on the Livet, Tamnavulin has distilled since 1966. Water comes from the Easterton Spring, filtered through the surrounding limestone.
The spirit was made in copper pot stills with purifiers that keep the spirit light, for a light, fruity make of real charm. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the light character to the fore. At a youthful age the orchard fruit is lively and the malt soft. Long, gentle ageing turns the orchard fruit towards honey and soft spice. Its modern range leans on cask finishes, the motto single malt, double flavour. The name is Gaelic for mill on the hill, a nod to the old mill on its grounds. Tamnavulin sits in Glen Livet, close to Glenlivet, Braeval and Tomintoul. The light, clean make takes a cask finish particularly well.
At an approachable 46% it is light and balanced. Vanilla and a light cream from the barrel, with apple, pear and a soft honey. The mouthfeel is soft, the fruit carried on a honeyed body. A gently warming, fruity finish lingers. This is a clean, fruity malt from the Livet glen.
