Single malt Tamnavulin, an independent Dràm Mòr bottling matured to 10 year old from 2008, drawn from cask 110915 and bottled at 55.3%. Only 225 bottles were released. Tamnavulin was first built in 1966 in Glen Livet, beneath the Cairngorms, and it is one of the few distilleries on the River Livet. For decades its malt fed the Whyte and Mackay blends rather than single malt.
Distilled on limestone filtered spring water for a delicate make, building the smooth Speyside style it is loved for. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the light character to the fore. Still young, the malt is light and fruity with a gentle lift. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the fruity, honeyed core over time. The name is Gaelic for mill on the hill, a nod to the old mill on its grounds. Tamnavulin sits in Glen Livet, close to Glenlivet, Braeval and Tomintoul. The light, clean make takes a cask finish particularly well.
Undiluted at 55.3%, it is layered. Green apple and a soft vanilla sit alongside honeyed oak sweetness underneath. It is fresh and clean, the fruity spirit shining through. It closes smooth, fruity and soft. This is Tamnavulin's smooth, fruity Speyside style.
