Description
This official Tamdhu single malt, a 14 year old from 2008 and bottled at 46%. Tamdhu was first built in 1897 by a blending consortium on a Speyside site once known for smuggling, and it has been the sherried face of Speyside since its revival. Under Ian Macleod it is matured chiefly in sherry seasoned Spanish and American oak.
Distilled on soft Speyside water in onion stills, building the rich, sherried style Tamdhu is known for. Sherry seasoned oak gave the dried fruit richness Tamdhu is known for. Around the mid teens the malt gains a fuller dried fruit over the orchard fruit. The fragrant, fruity spirit has the weight to stand up to active sherry wood. The name Tamdhu is Gaelic for little dark hill, and the architect was Charles Doig. The River Spey runs past the distillery on its way to the Moray coast. Ian Macleod runs Tamdhu alongside Glengoyne and Rosebank. Water is drawn from the Tamdhu Spring on the Speyside site.
Reduced to 46%, it is mellow. The Oloroso brings fig, date and a gingered oak. Soft orchard fruit and raisin sit behind the spice. It closes long, sherried and warm. This is Tamdhu's classic sherried Speyside style.
