Single malt Tamdhu, an independent Cadenhead's bottling, a 24 year old release from 1991 and bottled at 54.4%. Just 486 bottles were filled. Tamdhu, built in 1897 on a Speyside site once known for smuggling, is famed for its sherry cask whisky. The old Knockando railway station serves as the distillery's visitor centre.

Distilled on soft Speyside water in onion stills, building the rich, sherried style Tamdhu is known for. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed sweetness. At this age it is full and sherried, the fruit folded into a deep, nutty body. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the sherried, fruity core over time. The Spey valley's cool air gives a slow, even maturation in the warehouses. Tamdhu was built in 1897 by a consortium of blenders led by William Grant. The arrival of the Strathspey railway in the 1860s made the distillery possible. For decades its malt fed blends such as the Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark.

At a hearty 54.4% it carries real weight. The ex-Bourbon adds vanilla, cream and orchard fruit. It is deep and fruity, the sherry and oak well matched. Fig, raisin and oak see out a long finish. This is the sherry cask malt of Knockando.
