Description
A Tamdhu single malt, selected and bottled by Douglas Laing, a 22 year old Speyside malt from 1998, drawn from cask DL 15057 and bottled at 54.9%. A release of 261 bottles. Tamdhu was founded in 1897 by a group of blenders in Knockando, Speyside, and it was revived by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2013. Mothballed in 2010, the distillery was revived by Ian Macleod, who relaunched the single malt in 2013.
The spirit was made in copper stills and filled into sherry seasoned oak, for a fragrant, fruity spirit with weight for the cask. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, with vanilla under the orchard fruit. At this age it is full and sherried, the fruit folded into a deep, nutty body. First fill Oloroso casks drive the rich, dried fruit character Tamdhu is known for. The River Spey runs past the distillery on its way to the Moray coast. Ian Macleod runs Tamdhu alongside Glengoyne and Rosebank. Water is drawn from the Tamdhu Spring on the Speyside site.
At a full 54.9% it is bold and fruity. The ex-Bourbon lends vanilla, honey and apple over the malt. It is deep and fruity, the sherry and oak well matched. A warming, sherried finish lingers. This is a dried fruit rich Speyside malt.
