Description
From Douglas Laing comes this Tamdhu, aged 19 year old from 1989 and bottled at 55.8%. Only 202 bottles were released. Set in Knockando, Speyside, Tamdhu has distilled since 1897. Water comes from the Tamdhu Spring, the distillery set on the banks of the Spey.
The spirit was made in copper stills and filled into sherry seasoned oak, for a fragrant, fruity spirit with weight for the cask. Maturation in Oloroso sherry laid fig and raisin over the spirit. By this age the sherried spirit rounds into dried fruit and a nutty depth. Long ageing turns the orchard fruit towards fig, raisin and a warm spice. Tamdhu sits among the great sherried Speysiders, a sister to Macallan in style. The Spey valley's cool air gives a slow, even maturation in the warehouses. Tamdhu was built in 1897 by a consortium of blenders led by William Grant. The arrival of the Strathspey railway in the 1860s made the distillery possible.
Bottled at a cask strength 55.8%, it is intense. The Oloroso brings raisin, orchard fruit and a warm spice. The texture is rich and rounded, the fruit lifted by sherry. Fig, raisin and oak see out a long finish. This is a sherry matured Speyside single malt.
