Douglas Laing bottled this Tamdhu single malt, a 17 year old from 1998, drawn from cask DL 10768 and bottled at 48.4%. The outturn was 234 bottles. Tamdhu was founded in 1897 by the Spey at Knockando; it is famed for its sherry cask maturation. Tamdhu ran the last Saladin box maltings in Scotland, the boxes still standing on site.

It was drawn off copper pot stills fed by the Tamdhu Spring, for the full, fruity make that suits sherry maturation. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the fruit lead. By this age the sherried spirit rounds into dried fruit and a nutty depth. The cool Speyside climate gives a slow, even maturation over many years. Tamdhu sits among the great sherried Speysiders, a sister to Macallan in style. The Spey valley's cool air gives a slow, even maturation in the warehouses. Tamdhu was built in 1897 by a consortium of blenders led by William Grant. The arrival of the Strathspey railway in the 1860s made the distillery possible.

Undiluted at 48.4%, it is layered. The ex-Bourbon adds vanilla, cream and orchard fruit. The mouthfeel is rich, the fruit carried on a sherried body. The finish is deep, waxy and spiced. This is a rich, sherried Speyside single malt.
