Description
This is a Tamdhu single malt, chosen and bottled by Edition Spirits, a 16 year old from 2007, drawn from cask HL 21179 and bottled at 59.8%. Only 336 bottles were released. Tamdhu was established in 1897 on a Speyside site once known for smuggling; its rich, sherried malt has a devoted following. For decades its malt fed blends such as the Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark.
Distilled on soft Speyside water in onion stills, building the rich, sherried style Tamdhu is known for. Maturation in Oloroso sherry laid fig and raisin over the spirit. Mid age brings a deeper sherry and a riper dried fruit note. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the sherried, fruity core over time. Ian Macleod runs Tamdhu alongside Glengoyne and Rosebank. Water is drawn from the Tamdhu Spring on the Speyside site. The distillery was built on a spot once known for illicit distilling. A full, fruity spirit gives Tamdhu the weight to carry active sherry wood.
At cask strength 59.8% it is rich and full. The Oloroso brings dried fruit, fig and a nutty depth. Beneath it run fig, raisin and a warm spice. The close is warm, dried fruit over soft oak. This is Ian Macleod's sherry led Speysider.
