Description
Douglas Laing selected this Tamdhu matured to 16 year old from 1998, drawn from cask DL 10360 and bottled at 48.4%. 324 bottles in all. Opened in 1897 on the banks of the Spey in Speyside, Tamdhu is a sherry led Speyside malt. Ian Macleod runs Tamdhu alongside Glengoyne and Rosebank.
Distilled in copper onion stills on Tamdhu Spring water, for a rich Speyside spirit built to take sherry wood. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed sweetness. Mid age brings a deeper sherry and a riper dried fruit note. A patient maturation suits the rich, sherried Tamdhu character. The name Tamdhu is Gaelic for little dark hill, and the architect was Charles Doig. The River Spey runs past the distillery on its way to the Moray coast. Ian Macleod runs Tamdhu alongside Glengoyne and Rosebank. Water is drawn from the Tamdhu Spring on the Speyside site. The distillery was built on a spot once known for illicit distilling.
At a hearty 48.4% it carries real weight. The American oak brings vanilla and a honeyed apple. A dried fruit and a nutty oak give it real depth. A long, sherried finish carries a nutty depth. This is a deep, fruity Speyside single malt.
