Description
Gordon & Company selected this Tamdhu, a 10 year old from 2007, drawn from cask 6824 and bottled at 54.9%. The outturn was 339 bottles. Tamdhu was founded in 1897 by the Spey at Knockando; it is famed for its sherry cask maturation. Ian Macleod runs Tamdhu alongside Glengoyne and Rosebank.
It was drawn off copper pot stills fed by the Tamdhu Spring, for the full, fruity make that suits sherry maturation. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending vanilla and honey. Still young, the malt is fruity and sherried with a soft spice. Spanish and American oak sherry casks build the layered Tamdhu profile. An in house cooperage was set up in 2019 to manage its sherry casks. Tamdhu sits among the great sherried Speysiders, a sister to Macallan in style. The Spey valley's cool air gives a slow, even maturation in the warehouses. Tamdhu was built in 1897 by a consortium of blenders led by William Grant.
At a hearty 54.9% it carries real weight. Ex-Bourbon oak gives vanilla, honey and orchard fruit. The mouthfeel is rich, the fruit carried on a sherried body. A warming, sherried finish lingers. This is a deep, fruity Speyside single malt.
