Bodegas y Viñedos Tábula make Damana 5 in Ribera del Duero from estate Tempranillo on sandy loam soils. Six months in French and American oak give a creamy, balanced red of blackberry, red cherry and fresh plum with a light toasted edge.
Description
Damana 5 is a Ribera del Duero red from Bodegas y Viñedos Tábula, a winery founded in 2002 at Olivares del Duero in Valladolid. It is made entirely from Tempranillo grown on the estate's own vines, now more than a decade old, planted in sandy loam soils that drain freely and suit the variety. Ribera del Duero sits on the high northern Castilian plateau, where wide swings between hot days and cold nights slow ripening and preserve acidity and colour, giving the fruit firm structure and depth. The grapes are hand harvested into small crates, chilled, destemmed and cold macerated for two days to extract colour and aroma before fermentation, then aged for six months in French and American oak barrels that round the tannins and add measured spice without masking the fruit. The wine is bright and well balanced. The nose shows blackberry, red cherry and fresh plum lifted by clove and a toasted note, while the palate is creamy and supple with red berry fruit and a vanilla and oak frame. The finish is clean and medium in length. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, ideally with grilled and roast meats.
