A sweetened 16 Year Old Trinidad sipper at 40%, Zaya leans into dessert with heavy vanilla, caramel, coffee and dark chocolate over soft oak, an easy after dinner pour that reads more confection than dry aged rum.
Description
Zaya Gran Reserva is a distillery bottling from TDL in Trinidad, built around column still molasses rum and presented as a smooth, accessible 16 year old. It comes from the lighter Spanish heritage idiom that Trinidad does so well, then leans further toward crowd pleasing softness.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at 40%, it is openly sweetened, and the dosage shapes the experience: pronounced vanilla, caramel, coffee and dark chocolate run from nose to finish, with nutty, caramelised notes and only gentle wood underneath. Honesty matters here, this is a dessert style rum rather than a dry, contemplative sipper, and it shows little of the savoury Trinidad character found in cask strength TDL. Taken on its own terms, it is an undemanding evening pour or a sweet base for a rum and cola.
