Description
This white comes from Swartberg Wingerde in Piekenierskloof, a high altitude ward of the Western Cape in South Africa that Rüdiger Gretschel sought out for its old bush vines and cool growing conditions. The elevation and the mountain setting give large day to night temperature swings, so the grapes ripen slowly and keep bright acidity, while the poor sandstone soils limit vigour and concentrate flavour. Grenache Blanc brings body and orchard fruit, Chenin Blanc adds acidity and a waxy edge, and Palomino contributes a lean, saline savoury note. Farming is sustainable. The components are fermented and aged for around nine months in separate containers before blending, an approach that preserves each grape's freshness and adds gentle texture without leaning on new oak. The wine is bright golden. The nose is green apple and lemon with white peach and pear, lifted by white flowers and a faint salty mineral note. The palate is dry and fresh, with firm acidity and a savoury, textured finish. Serve at around 9C in a white glass.
