Swartberg Wingerde makes this Western Cape red from bush vine Garnacha, Pinotage and Syrah grown at Piekenierskloof. Barrel aged and farmed sustainably, it shows ripe blackberry, plum and a peppery, smoky edge over warm Cape fruit.
Description
Swartberg Wingerde sits in Piekenierskloof, a high plateau within the Western Cape South Coast region known for old bush vines and decomposed sandstone soils. The altitude moderates the warm Cape climate and widens the diurnal range, so the Garnacha, Pinotage and Syrah ripen fully while holding acidity. Bush training keeps yields low and concentrates the fruit. The wine is aged in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds a layer of spice and vanilla without masking the fruit. Garnacha brings red berry lift and warmth, Pinotage adds dark plummy depth and a smoky note, and Syrah contributes structure and black pepper. The result is deep ruby in the glass, with an intense nose of blackberry and ripe plum backed by pepper, earth and a hint of liquorice. The palate is full and generous, the tannins ripe and rounded, the finish warm and savoury. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, ideally decanted for half an hour to open the fruit. It suits grilled red meat, lamb and aged hard cheese.
