Suertes del Marqués work native varieties on the volcanic slopes of the Orotava Valley in Tenerife. Medianías blends Listán Negro with Vijariego Negro and Tintilla, aged eight months in French oak, for a fresh, smoky red with bright red fruit and a saline volcanic edge.
Description
Suertes del Marqués is a family winery in the north of Tenerife, working the volcanic slopes of the Valle de la Orotava with native grapes and minimal intervention since 2006. Medianías is led by Listán Negro with Vijariego Negro and Tintilla, grown on free draining volcanic soils that give the wine its lift, smoky mineral character and salinity. The Atlantic influence and altitude keep temperatures moderate, holding back ripeness and preserving the high natural acidity and low to medium alcohol that mark these island reds. The grapes are trained on the region's distinctive braided cordon system. Fermentation is followed by eight months in French oak barrels, a restrained ageing that rounds the texture through slow oxygen exchange while letting the volcanic terroir and fresh fruit speak. The colour is a bright, light ruby. The nose shows wild red berries, cherry, crushed pepper and a smoky, ashy mineral note. The palate is light and energetic, with red fruit, a herbal lift and a saline, stony finish. Serve cool, around 14 to 15 degrees, in a Burgundy style glass. It is a versatile food wine that can stand in for a white.
