Strohmeier makes this natural, organic rosé in western Styria from Blauer Wildbacher, the schilcher grape. Made with minimal intervention, it is pale, light and high in acidity, showing tart red currant, rhubarb and a fresh, dry finish.
Description
Strohmeier sits in western Styria, the green heart of Austria, where Franz and Christine Strohmeier farm eight hectares of organic vineyards and make natural wines through minimal intervention. This rosé is made from Blauer Wildbacher, the local grape behind the region's distinctive schilcher rosés, here from a single vineyard called Lestein. Western Styria's cool climate and steep slopes are central to the style: the marginal ripening conditions give the grape its trademark high, bright acidity and pale colour, while the schist and gneiss soils lend a mineral edge. The winemaking is natural and low intervention, with organic farming, native yeast fermentation and minimal additions, and the wine is suitable for vegans. The result is pale and light. The nose is fresh and tart, with red currant, rhubarb and red berries over a light floral note. The palate is dry, light bodied and racy, the high acidity giving a crisp, almost zesty character through a clean green-apple-tinged finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and partners salads, white fish, shellfish and lighter poultry.
