Description
Single malt Strathisla, an independent Gordon & MacPhail bottling, a 45 year old from 1969 and bottled at 43%. Set on the banks of the Isla at Keith, Strathisla has distilled since 1786. Long scarce as an official bottling, Strathisla was for decades bottled mainly by Gordon and MacPhail.
The spirit was run through onion shaped stills with long necks for a rich make, to build a creamy, orchard fruit character. Ex-Sherry wood suited the full make, adding a dried fruit richness. Very old Strathisla turns profound, waxy and tropical yet still honeyed and fruity. The cool Speyside climate gives a slow, even maturation over many years. Dunnage warehouses on site give a slow, humid maturation by the river. The make leans rich and fruity, fuller than the lighter Speyside style. Few distilleries can claim an unbroken run of distilling as long as Strathisla's.
At an easy 43% it is gentle. The Oloroso adds figgy dried fruit and a nutty edge, and apple, almond and a warm spice meet soft vanilla and honey from the cask. Soft orchard fruit and almond sit behind the sweetness. The close is warm, fruit over soft oak. This is Strathisla's classic honeyed Speyside style.
