Description
Duncan Taylor bottled this Strathisla single malt, aged 41 year old from 1967, drawn from cask 1892 and bottled at 47.9%. Just 127 bottles were filled. Established in 1786 as the Milltown distillery in Keith, in the heart of Speyside, Strathisla is the oldest working distillery in the Highlands. The single malt is prized for its honeyed, fruity Speyside character.
It was drawn off the distillery's short copper stills, for a fruity, honeyed spirit with real weight. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed sweetness. At forty years and more it is rich and waxy, tropical fruit, honey and old oak in a profound old malt. Long, gentle maturation turns the orchard fruit towards honey and almond. The distillery stands among gardens by the rushing River Isla. The malt is the fruity heart of the Chivas Regal blend, owned by Chivas Brothers since 1950. Water comes from the Broomhill Spring, the distillery set on the River Isla at Keith.
At a natural 47.9% it is full and rich. A gentle vanilla and cream from the wood runs under honey, apple and a soft spice. It is rich and deep, the fruit and oak well matched. The finish runs rich, nutty and warm. This is an honeyed, fruity Speyside single malt.
